Pick Your Halloween

Gothic And Glamorous

You love spooky and dramatic, but without the cheese. Basically Dracula’s dinner party. Think:

  • Black or dark red flowers
  • Black tablecloth
  • Elegant black and white tableware and food
  • Mirrors
  • Velvet backdrops
  • Old-school candlesticks with chunky black candles and dramatic candlelight
  • Red wine
  • Everyone dressed up

Classic Halloween

A grown-up, yet not boring, night of the full Halloween experience. Think:

  • Carved pumpkins
  • Skeletons, bats, spiders and ghosts
  • Tombstones and coffins
  • Black and orange decorations, with plenty of cobwebs
  • Orange candlelight or jack-o’-lanterns
  • Halloween cocktails and food
  • A playlist of Halloween classics
  • Fancy dress

Witches’ Night

Have your guests join your witches coven. Think:

  • Cauldrons
  • Black, white, and blood-red candles
  • Herbs
  • Dark tableware
  • Old bottles and jars labelled ‘Eye of Newt’, ‘Dragon’s Blood’ etc
  • A potions bar where guests mix their own themed drinks
  • Spooky playlist
  • Guests dressed as witches, wizards, warlocks and magical creatures

Haunted House

Theatrical spooky house. Think:

  • Flickering candles (get electric ones that flicker on purpose) or dim amber lighting
  • Old sepia photographs, old books, ticking (or stopped) clocks
  • Faded tablecloths and dried flowers
  • 2-3 chairs covered in old sheets
  • Mirrors and creepy portraits
  • Cobwebs
  • A spooky sound-effects playlist of creaking doors, footsteps and other ghostly noises
  • Guests come as ghostly versions of famous people from eras long gone

Bonus points if your house is actually haunted.

Halloween Disco

What if Halloween and a nightclub had a slightly questionable baby? Great if your friends love to dance. Think:

  • Black decorations
  • Disco balls
  • Spooky lighting
  • Halloween themed nibbles
  • Space to dance
  • A fantastic playlist to get everyone on said dancefloor
  • Everyone in fancy dress
Orange disco balls

Top Tip

The less you can see, the less decorating you have to do, so keep the lights low!

Halloween Decoration Inspiration

Halloween is one of those rare occasions when you can go completely over the top with your decorations and nobody bats an eyelid. Bring out the inner child in you – and your guests – with creepy sights, spooky lighting and ‘wow, that’s cool’ moments.

And it doesn’t have to be difficult.

Sure, you can hand-make coffins and tombstones if you want (been there, so no judgement from us!), but you can also get plenty of spooky atmosphere with very little effort. Projectors can throw moving zombies, ghosts or other creepy scenes onto walls and windows, while giant spiderwebs, pumpkins and a few well-placed decorations can transform a room surprisingly quickly.

We got the idea for these tombstones (which are simply painted chunks of wood) from Pinterest

Lighting will do a lot of the heavy lifting. Turn down the main lights and use electric candles, lanterns, carved pumpkins and fairy lights instead.

Top Tip

To avoid overwhelm, pick one or two areas to make spectacular, and leave the rest alone. The entrance and your food/drinks table are great places to start.

What to Wear For Halloween

Halloween is the one night of the year when anything goes. From spooky, to anything black, to a dead version of your favourite movie character – and everything in between. Have some fun with it! A few starter ideas to branch from include:

Traditional Halloween Costumes
  • Witch
  • Wizard
  • Vampire
  • Ghost
  • Black cat
  • Zombie
  • Skeleton
  • Werewolf
  • Hound of the Baskerville
  • Spider
  • Murder victim
  • Deranged surgeon

Film, Books & TV Inspired Halloween Costume Characters

Characters with a bit of drama, mystery, madness or a deliciously dark backstory include:

  • Wednesday or Morticia Addams
  • Frankenstein or Victor Frankenstein
  • Beetlejuice
  • Miss Havisham (Great Expectations)
  • Ghostbusters character
  • Lady Macbeth
  • The Woman in Black
  • Any horror movie character e.g. Freddy Krueger
  • Dorian Gray
  • The Other Mother (Coraline)
  • Any doll character (you know dolls are so freaky)
  • Hannibal Lecter
  • Pennywise the clown
  • The Headless Horseman
  • Any Tim Burton character

If you can dress your dog up like the Spiderdog You Tube videos and scare everyone, then amazing!

Fun Food & Drink For A Halloween Party

You can go completely nuts with this (there are tonnes of gruesome clever ideas on Pinterest), but it’s also fine to keep it simple and just give ordinary food a Halloween makeover.

Easy ideas:

  • Charcuterie or cheese boards
  • Chilli served in a cauldron
  • Pizza
  • Pumpkin soup shots
  • Baked camembert and bread to dip
  • Red velvet cake
  • Caramel/toffee apples
  • Halloween-shaped biscuits or cupcakes (ghosts, spiders, witches’ hats)

Go for as much or as little effort as you feel like – your witches cauldron, scattered pumpkins, themed decorations and lighting will do much of the theming work for you if cooking is not your thing. Your friends are there to see you and have fun, not visit a Hollywood special-effects department.

Spooky Halloween Drinks

Rather than making disgusting drinks, go for dramatic-looking drinks that taste delicious – much more fun for everyone.

It’s easy to have red wine on offer, or to make a ‘witches’ potion’ punch, preferably in a cauldron, that everyone can help themselves to. Don’t forget a mocktail for those who don’t drink or are driving.

If you want to add some freaky fun, fill a clean (food-safe, non-latex) glove with water, tie it securely and freeze it. Remove the glove before putting the frozen hand into the punch and, da-da, you have a floating dead ice-hand in your punch.

Fab themed cocktails could include:

  • Bloody Marys – obviously
  • Witch’s Brew – something murky green or purple e.g. Apple Fizz (vodka, apple schnapps, lemon, soda – with optional extra green food colouring to get that swampy colour)
  • Black Martini – appropriately dark and vampy
  • Vampire’s Kiss – vodka-cranberry or strawberry daiquiri (bonus points if you can serve it in novelty blood-bag-style drinks pouches)
  • Poison Apple – Appletini, served with a red apple slice garnish
  • Sparkly dark liqueur shots in potion bottles e.g. Gordon’s Shimmer Berry Gin Liqueur

Top Tip

For fun ice cubes, freeze jelly-bug sweets in ice-cube trays (one per cube). When it melts, people get a shock to find bugs in their drinks. But they’re edible and non-threatening (just be careful regarding the age group of the people you give these to, to avoid choke hazards!).

Set The Mood Music

You can’t go wrong with a Halloween song playlist, and there are many on Spotify (including one by us!) to borrow. They’re full of the classics like Thriller, Ghostbusters, and the Monster Mash.

If you’re going Gothic, you might prefer classic rock, gothic rock, or dramatic film soundtracks.

For a Halloween disco, you probably want normal dance music (to your tastes) interspersed with occasional Halloween classic.

If you’re not a music person, a background soundscape of spooky sound effects like creaking doors and ghostly wails would add atmosphere to your event.

Halloween Extras

You don’t have to have activities at a Halloween party, but if it’s something you and your friends would enjoy, here are some ideas:

  • Classic pumpkin carving competition
  • Halloween quiz with rounds on horror films, famous monsters, Halloween traditions, and ‘name the spooky song’
  • Spooky costume prizes for funniest, scariest, most creative, best DIY, most committed, most obscure, most convincing in-character performance etc
  • Murder mystery

You Don’t Need To Overthink It

You don’t need:

  • £200 of Halloween decorations
  • A three-course themed menu
  • A house that looks like a horror film set
  • Make-up like a Hollywood star
  • A costume that took six weeks to hand-make

You do need:

  • Some friends
  • Something to nibble
  • Something to drink
  • Some music
  • A few atmospheric touches
  • An excuse to have fun

Halloween’s just a great excuse to get together with the friends you love.

Our Top Tips For This Theme

  • Pick one big Halloween moment. If you’re short on time, money or both, choose one thing that makes the party unmistakably Halloween – a giant pumpkin, a dramatic drinks table, or everyone in costume.
  • Don’t try to transform your whole house. Pick one or two areas to make fabulous. You’re having a fun party, not opening a new tourist attraction.
  • Lighting is your secret weapon. Turn down the main lights and use electric candles, lanterns and fairy lights. Instant atmosphere, minimal effort.
  • Remember Halloween doesn’t have to mean horror. Make it spooky, glamorous, funny, theatrical, ridiculous – whatever you and your friends will enjoy.
  • Make the food easy. Your guests would rather eat something nice, than have you super-stressed from perfecting your 300th painstakingly crafted olive eyeball.
  • Get yourself ready before the guests arrive. Nobody wants to spend the first hour of their own party still assembling a giant spider or canapé ghosts.
  • And then stop hosting. Your guests aren’t coming to admire your perfectly arranged table. They’re coming to spend time with you. Once they know where the nibbles, drinks and loo is, your job is talking to your friends, dancing (if you like) and enjoying yourself.

Above all, don’t wait for the perfect Halloween party. You don’t need a perfect haunted house, an elaborate costume, or Pinterest-worthy food. You need people you like and a fun excuse to get together, and Halloween is exactly that.
