What To Wear For Your Greek Gods & Goddesses Party
Option #1 – Keeping it simple yet stylish
Host a classic toga party, where everyone comes dressed as an ancient Greek in a toga – easily made from white fabric or a bedsheet, or hired at a costume shop. Add a laurel wreath to your head, some gold jewellery and sandals and you’re pretty much there.
Option #2 – Going mythological
For a bit more fun, get your guests to come as one of the Greek Gods or Goddesses from mythology, or a mythological character/creature.
You don’t need a complicated costume (necessarily – props to you if you’re going full-on basilisk). A simple toga, laurel head-wreath, and one or two appropriate props will transform a very simple outfit into a Greek Goddess or God. Some easy ideas include:
- Artemis – goddess of the hunt (think: bow and quiver of arrows)
- Apollo – god of the sun (sun halo or golden accessories)
- Athena – goddess of wisdom (books, owl motifs or a helm)
- Poseidon – god of the sea (trident, seaweed hair)
- Aphrodite – goddess of love (however you want to interpret ‘love’!)
- Hades – god of the underworld (making a statement all in black)
- Hera – queen of the gods, goddess of marriage and women (crown/tiara, veil, sceptre and/or peacock feathers)
- Zeus – leader of the gods (thunderbolts and an impressive beard)
- Demeter – goddess of agriculture (wheat sheaves, basket of fruit)
- Ares – god of war (helm and shield)
- Persephone – queen of the underworld (pomegranate, spring flowers)
- Hephaestus – god of fire and forges (fire, hammer, metallic accessories)
- Hecate – goddess of magic & witchcraft (dark robes, moon jewellery, keys, torch)
- Dionysus – god of wine (grape leaves and, naturally, a bottle of wine)
- Iris – goddess of the rainbow (rainbow colours and gold wings)
- Hermes – messenger of the gods (winged sandals, cap and staff)
- Eris – goddess of discord and strife (dark clothing, golden apple)

And don’t forget mythical creatures! A Medusa, siren, Pegasus or even a three-headed Cerberus (who’s dressing up their dog?!) could make an appearance…
Top Tip
Get your friends excitedly discussing their planned outfits with each other to encourage everyone to turn up in fancy dress. Once people know everyone else is dressing up, they’re much more likely to join in too.
Decoration Inspiration For a Greek Gods & Goddesses Party
For your immortal setting, think light, airy, and Mediterranean, with a touch of ancient grandeur. Suitable decorative touches on this theme include:
- White fabric drapes, perhaps with gold trim – you are Gods, after all
- White columns (cardboard ones are perfectly acceptable)
- A Greece-inspired backdrop, perhaps featuring classical statues or cypress trees
- Table settings with an ancient Greek frieze runner
- Bunches of grapes, olive branches and plenty of laurel leaves
- White and gold candles or lanterns
- Terracotta pots and amphora-style jugs
- Scattered cushions and low seating for relaxed lounging
- And a few references to Greek mythology – perhaps a Medusa head or an owl for Athena.
Little touch, big impact: you don’t need to transform your entire home into ancient Greece. A white tablecloth, a few bunches of grapes, a couple of laurel branches, and gold candles can create a perfectly fun Mount Olympus.
If You Want To Take It Further
If you have sunny, dry weather, sufficient garden space and the budget, you could have a lot of fun turning your garden into a Mediterranean wonderland.
Think tall white columns, ivy-clad white statues, cypress trees, pots of lavender and herbs such as sage, running water from old amphora jugs, soft ethereal fairy lights, perhaps even a Pegasus statue or two…

Divine Drinks For Your Greek Gods & Goddesses Party
Ambrosia, the legendary sustenance of the Greek Gods, may not be real, but these modern-day offerings should do nicely for an Olympian celebration:
- Champagne (and champagne-based cocktails such as bellinis)
- Wine (of all varieties)
- Non-alcoholic options such as sparkling grape juice or sparkling elderflower
If you and your friends love a fancy drink, why not take things a little further with some fun themed cocktails:
- Siren’s Song – rum and blue curacao, luring all who drink it to their doom
- Artemis’ Moonlight – indigo gin and elderflower liqueur/tonic, mysterious as the night
- Aphrodite’s Elixir – coconut rum and strawberry lemonade, pink and fruity like it just frothed from that seashell
- Hades’ Kiss – dark and rick espresso martini
- Styx and Stones – any whisky-based cocktail served over large ice cubes
Top Tip
Create a simple cocktail menu by choosing 3-5 cocktails you already like and give them mythological names

Fun Food For Your Greek Extravaganza
Option #1 – Nectar & Nibbles
For an easy, low-stress buffet, create a generous Greek-inspired grazing table with:
- Figs
- Olives
- Grapes
- Feta
- Halloumi
- Walnuts
- Pita bread
- Dips like tzatziki, taramasalata and/or hummus
- Chicken souvlaki skewers
And don’t feel you need to make everything yourself – shop-bought is absolutely fine. Save your energy for enjoying your party.
Serve everything in terracotta or white crockery, and scatter a few laurel or olive leaves around the table.
The trick? Make it look abundant. You don’t need dozens of complicated dishes – a generous spread of simple, delicious, easy-to-eat foods can look fantastic (and taste amazing).

Option #2 – An All Out Feast Of The Gods
If you love being the hostess-with-the-mostest and whipping up delights in the kitchen, a sit-down, sharing-style Greek banquet could include the nibbles above plus:
- Stuffed vine leaves
- Greek salad
- Spanokopita
- Honey-drizzled feta
- Watermelon, feta & mint
- Gryos
- Lemon & herb roasted potatoes
- Honey-glazed roasted vegetables
For dessert, try hone-soaked baklava, orange and honey cake, Greek lemon cake, or Greek yoghurt with honey, figs and walnuts.

And for the centrepiece? A huge platter of ‘The Fruits of Olympus’ piled high with grapes, figs, pomegranates, dates and other beautiful Mediterranean fruits. Simple but spectacular.
Set The Mood With Music
How do you want your guests to feel? You might start with some classical or epic movie-themed ‘Gladiator’ style background music (technically Roman rather than Greek, but we’ll allow it!).
Or perhaps Mediterranean acoustic guitar over dinner would create an elegant, warm ambience.
Later, you could switch to upbeat music and let those Goddesses and Gods dance.
Just make sure you’ve planned ahead as to whether your guests should start smashing plates… Probably best not.
Greek Gods & Goddesses Extras
Nobody wants organised games all night, but a couple of themed activities can add fun if you’re friends are the type to be up for them:
- The Goddess’ Challenge
Split guests into teams and give them a series of silly challenges inspired by Greek mythology
e.g.
Build the tallest ‘Mount Olympus’ from cups
Name as many Greek Gods/Goddesses as possible in 60 seconds
Act out a Greek myth for the other team to guess
– Award the winning team the prestigious Golden Laurel Wreath. - Mythology Conversation Starters
Scatter a few mythology-inspired questions around the table/party and see where the discussions take you e.g.- If you could have one Greek God/Goddess’s power, whose would you choose?
- Would you rather live on Mount Olympus or rule the Underworld?
- Which God/Goddess would make the best dinner-party guest? The worst?
- If you were a God/Goddess of something completely mundane, what would you be the God/Goddess of (e.g. God of making terrible decisions after midnight)
- Which mythical creature would be the most annoying flatmate?
- Best Costume Awards
Small prizes for the best costume, most creative interpretation, or the most questionable use of a bedsheet…
